AI Chatbot for Your Singapore Business: A Buyer's Guide

A modern AI chatbot does three jobs. It answers questions from your own business content (your services, your prices, your opening hours) instead of reciting generic replies. It captures a visitor's details in the flow of conversation once they show real intent. And it works at 2am, when plenty of enquiries actually arrive. You can rent one as a monthly subscription, or have one built into your website. Here is what to check before you pay for either, plus a quiz that tells you if you are ready.

What should a chatbot actually do for you?

Forget the old button-menu bots that trap visitors in "Press 1 for pricing" loops. A current bot reads the knowledge you give it and answers in plain language. The useful ones go further: when a visitor shows buying intent, the bot answers first, then asks for a name and number so a human can follow up. That answer-then-capture behaviour is the whole game. We showed why it out-converts a static form in our piece on chatbots and website leads.

Should you rent a chat widget or build one into your site?

Both routes exist here, and neither is wrong. They fit different stages.

● Monthly chat subscription

Rented · pay monthly, forever
  • Live in a day, no developer needed
  • Your business knowledge sits in the vendor's dashboard, and you maintain it
  • Leads land in their inbox or CRM; you connect the pipes
  • Fees climb with conversations, seats and AI add-ons

● Built into your site

Owned · part of the website itself
  • Trained on your business as part of the build
  • Can see which page the visitor is reading
  • Leads write straight into your own system
  • No separate subscription; it updates with the site

Ours is the built-in kind, so weigh our bias. Aria, the assistant on this site, is trained on our services and pricing, knows which page the visitor is reading, hands off to WhatsApp when a conversation turns serious, and writes every captured lead straight into our own system rather than a third-party dashboard. You can watch the same widget work in this live demo. A trained agent like this is included with every Aphyx Professional-plan website; the details are on our plans page.

The five checks before you buy any chatbot

  1. Does it know your business? Ask it your three most common customer questions. If the answers could apply to any company, you are buying a generic widget with your logo on it.
  2. Does it hand off gracefully? In Singapore the deal usually closes on WhatsApp. The bot should offer that handoff, or a human, the moment a conversation gets serious, not trap the visitor in chat.
  3. Where do captured leads go? Your inbox? A CRM? A dashboard nobody opens? Leave a fake enquiry and follow it to the end before you sign anything.
  4. What does it say when it does not know? It must decline, not invent. Ask the vendor to show you, live, the bot declining a question it cannot know. We built this behaviour into Aria deliberately, because a bot that guesses your prices wrong costs more than no bot.
  5. What does it cost as you grow? Per-conversation and per-message caps are where cheap plans get expensive. Price any plan at three times your current enquiry volume before you commit.

One more test we learned building Aria: ask a long question and watch whether the reply ever stops mid-sentence. Output token limits (the cap on how much the model may write per reply) do exactly that. We shipped that bug ourselves before catching it, and a reply that trails off right before its call to action quietly kills conversions.

Ask the vendor to show the bot declining a question it cannot know. If it invents an answer instead, walk away.

Chatbot readiness quiz

Not every business needs one yet. Answer six quick questions and get an honest verdict.

1 · How many enquiries do you get a month?
2 · How many are the same questions again and again?
3 · Do enquiries come in after hours?
4 · Do your buyers use WhatsApp?
5 · Is your pricing and FAQ content written down anywhere?
6 · Who follows up on new leads?

A rough steer from six answers, not an audit. Change any answer to recalculate.

If the verdict is not yet, start free: a clear FAQ page and a WhatsApp button cover most of the gap. If it is ready, decide rent versus own before comparing vendors. And if you would rather learn to run these tools yourself first, our guide to AI courses in Singapore maps out where to start.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI chatbot cost in Singapore?

Subscription chat tools typically start around S$30–S$150 a month for basic plans, and S$150–S$500 or more once AI answers, extra seats or higher conversation caps come in. Treat those as typical ranges we observe, not quotes; vendor pricing changes often. The other route is a bot built into your website as part of a web design plan. Every Aphyx Professional-plan site includes a trained AI agent, so there is no separate chatbot bill.

Does a chatbot handle Singlish and multiple languages?

Modern AI models cope with Singlish, Mandarin, Malay and mixed-language messages far better than the old rule-based bots did, but quality still varies by product and setup. Test before launch: send it the exact phrases your customers use, including the casual ones, and read every reply. If your customers write in more than one language, make that part of your buying test.

Will a chatbot make things up?

It can, if it is configured badly. The fix is scope limits and decline behaviour: the bot should answer only from your approved business content, and say it does not know (or hand off to a human) for anything outside that. Ask any vendor to demonstrate the decline live. If the bot invents an answer for them, it will invent prices and promises for your customers too.

Should I get a chatbot or just a WhatsApp button?

Both, ideally, because they do different jobs. A WhatsApp button costs nothing and closes deals, but every tap lands in your inbox, including questions your website already answers. A chatbot absorbs the repetitive questions and qualifies the serious buyers before handing them to WhatsApp. Chat qualifies, WhatsApp closes; that is how we wire our own site.

How do captured leads actually reach me?

It depends on the product, so check before you pay. Some tools email you each conversation, some push to a CRM, and some leave leads in a dashboard nobody opens. Send a fake enquiry and follow it to the end. On our site, Aria writes each captured lead into our own lead system the moment a visitor shares contact details.
